Ege And Snøhetta Reimagine Flooring With Generative Flatweaves

A collaboration between two Nordic powerhouses—Ege and Snøhetta—birthed a flatweave collection that upends homogenized serial production and standard pattern repeats. Unveiled at Copenhagen’s 3DaysofDesign, Matter reimagines floor as terrain, weaving compositions that echo the nuance of organic surfaces. The generative design process described as “semi-controllable” translates randomness into weft and warp, fabricated of recycled yarns on Ege’s most advanced flatweave looms. Algorithms switch up to manipulate individual threads. “From code to pixel, pixel to thread, and thread to carpet, we investigated how micro-scale design can shape macro-scale spaces,” explains Snøhetta product designer Francesca Giulia Poli. “The result is a surface that feels uniform yet ever-changing as you move through a space.” Available in two palettes, each with 18 base colors filtered through muted gray-beige or saturated blue-green undertones, the patterns diffuse softly like fog, at once logical yet unpredictable.
